If you have been following our blog post
before, you might have read a post where we debated the potential name
for the next iPhone. We guessed that the next iPhone could be called the
iPhone 5 or the iPhone 6 or even the iPhone 4G or iPhone LTE. Well, a
new development seems to suggest that the next iPhone is indeed going to
be called the iPhone 5. Read on to learn why we think that.
The next iPhone – What will it be called?
iOS 5 code mentions iPhone 5
As you may or may not know, iOS is a non fragmented OS. In other words, the next generation iOS will work on at least the previous generation iPhone. To understand that better, take this example. The iOS 5 was released for the iPhone 4S although it works on the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS as well. Now, this is where it gets a little interesting. Since the release of the iOS 5, Apple has had to come out with an update in the form of the iOS 5.0.1. The update was released to fix the battery problems in the iPhone 4S. Now, apparently, there are rumors that seem to suggest that the next iOS update, iOS 5.0.2 is going to come out pretty soon. This new update will supposedly target all the Siri problems that are being faced by the iPhone 4S users.
The INTERESTING part is that the code of the iOS 5.0.2 (see picture below) show that the iOS 5.0.2 is already being prepped to go on the next version of the iPhone that will most probably be called the iPhone 5. We say that because the code refers to the iPhone 4 as iPhone 4,1 and it refers to the iPhone 4S as iPhone 4,2. Then, there is a mention of an iPhone 5,1. So, this suggests that the next iPhone won’t be called the iPhone 6 or the iPhone 4G or the iPhone LTE model. This is just an assumption on our part. Please don’t take our word for it.
We thought we will write about it as there are some forums where
people are having rather heated discussions on the possible name of the
next iPhone. You can read our own post on the name for the next iPhone here.
When will the next iPhone 5 come out?
The above piece of information on the next iPhone being called the iPhone 5 might not be very surprising for a lot of people who might have thought that all along. For many iPhone lovers, the Million dollar question is WHEN will the next iPhone be released and what will it have? We have tried to answer both these critical questions below.
What is the probable release date of the next iPhone?
This will depend on so many factors. We would like to think that the next iPhone will be released in the summer of 2012. We are pretty optimistic about that as that is when the 2 year contract on the iPhone 4′s run out. Now, Apple would not want to see iPhone 4 users go to an Android or Windows phone in summer of 2012, just because a new iPhone has not come out. Some will argue that an iPhone 4 user can easily go for the iPhone 4S when their 2 year contact runs out, thereby still sticking with an Apple product.
But, in our opinion, we think that the average iPhone 4 user wants more than what the iPhone 4S has to offer. Though the iPhone 4S has been selling in the millions, our guess is that Apple made the iPhone 4S to capture a new segment of the market. We think that the iPhone 4S was never really meant to target iPhone 4 users. Otherwise, the iPhone 4S would have been released in summer of 2012 and not in October 2011. But, talking about the iPhone 4S, the sales of the 4S can definitely have an impact on the release date of the next iPhone. You can read a more detailed post about the iPhone 5 release date being affected by the sales of 4S units, at the just given link.
What will be featured in the next iPhone?
This is something that is open to speculation and wild rumors. Here is a quick run down of what we have heard so far. You can click through the individual items to learn more about the features that might be included in the next iPhone.

This is something that is open to speculation and wild rumors. Here is a quick run down of what we have heard so far. You can click through the individual items to learn more about the features that might be included in the next iPhone.
- 3D Camera in the iPhone 5 – Some rumors suggested that the iPhone 5 will have two cameras that will take pictures at different depths. Then, supposedly, the iOS 5 or the iOS 6 will merge the two pictures to produce a 3D effect. Some other rumors also suggested that the iPhone 5 will have a state of the art panoramic camera mode.
- 4G LTE support in iPhone 5 – Apple publicly announced that it held back on including 4G LTE support on the iPhone 4S because the current day LTE chips are just too big to fit into the iPhone’s circuit board. Apple also stated that the current day LTE chips are too power hungry. Will 6 months be enough for LTE chips to be come considerably small enough and energy efficient enough to be included in the iPhone 5?
- Next iPhone screen size – We wrote a post on why we think the iPhone 5 will continue to have the same 3.5 inch screen that has been featured since 2007. Many rumor sites are suggesting that Apple is moving to a 4 inch screen although none of those sites have been able to provide any kind of evidence to prove that the next iPhone will have a larger screen.
- iPhone 5 going away from retina display to screens made by SHARP – We are not very sure about this particular rumor’s credibility. But, there are strong indications that Apple have signed up Sharp to make screens for the iPad 3 or the next iPhone or maybe both iconic products. The new screens in the iPhone 5 could be based on IGZO technology or a breakthrough new technology called poly-silicon LCD screens that are thinner and more power efficient. But, if this rumor was true, it would mean that Apple would be losing the advantage they have with retina display. Currently, retina display is THE best display in the cell phone world, even though it made its debut way back in 2007.
- iPhone 5 shock mount technology -We recently also came upon a rumor that suggested that the iPhone 5 will have a patented shock mount system that will be able to deploy pressurized air bags to protect critical components in the iPhone 5, when it is dropped accidentally. This rumor didn’t get a lot of attention and it just shows that people aren’t really worried about what seems to be a superfluous security addition.
