iPhone 5 Rumors – This Week’s Roundup!

OK, here are our summaries or round ups of the iPhone 5 rumors that have been generated in the past week or so. We will be doing this quite regularly from now on as rumors are rife with the iPhone 5, with fresh rumors coming out of very nook and corner on the Internet. When reading through these rumors, always remember to take them with a grain of salt. Some might require you to gulp a pretty big chunk of salt but we will let you decide your sodium dose.
Rumor 1 – Shatter Resistant OLED Screen – iPhone 5 Rumors
The latest iPhone 5 rumors suggest that the iPhone 5 will feature a 3.5 inch, OLED display. OLED display stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode display. Apparently, the new OLED screen will also be shatterproof and much more resistant than the glass that is available in current day iPhone’s. This rumor is a little flimsy and we don’t think it will come true as the current iPhone has retina display that can pack in well in excess of 320 pixels in every square inch. The most an OLED screen can do is less than 300 pixels per square inch.
So, we don’t think Apple is going to go in reverse gear and come out with an iPhone 5 that doesn’t have a display that at least matches the retina display available on all the iPhones made to date. The iPhone 5 rumors about the shatter resistant properties of the screen could possibly have some truth to it. We recently wrote a post on how Apple has filed patents to incorporate air bag technology into the iPhone 5, to protect core components like the screen and circuit board. If these iPhone 5 rumors about the shatter resistant glass are true, we could get an iPhone 5 with an advanced Gorilla glass that is made out of a material that is best described as a thermoplastic carbon fiber one. These iPhone 5 rumors about the shatter resistant screen go on to say that the iPhone can be dropped from a height of even 12 feet, without causing a scratch on the iPhone!
Rumor 2 – No iPhone 5 in first half of 2011 – iPhone 5 Rumors
This is a rumor that we have heard a lot. We even wrote a post about how the sales of the iPhone 4S will affect the release date of the iPhone 5. Since the iPhone 4S was released in October, sales have been booming. Several Apple stores are in fact already facing backlogs that might only get bigger as Thanksgiving and Christmas come and go.
If iPhone 4S sales continue to be strong for a next few months, Apple might deliberately hold back the release of the iPhone 5, into next Fall. We must always remember that Apple is a business that is in the game to make profits first. Sure, they keep delivering amazing products but they are still a business. Business sense will always prevail over the urge to give customers something new, in a haste manner.
But, there could be a surprising twist to these particular iPhone 5 rumors. What if Apple sees a huge drop in sales of the iPhone 4S, after the holiday season has passed. Then, who knows, the iPhone 5 could come out as early as June 2012. But, we still think this is unlikely because just imagine how you would feel if you bought an iPhone 4S for $399 in October and then see a much improved iPhone 5 being offered for $499, in the first half of 2012. That will leave a few people fuming, especially since many 4S users are not happy with the performance of Siri and the iPhone 4S battery life.
The fact that Apple waited 16 months to release the iPhone 4S after the release of the iPhone 4 also seems to suggest that there will be a considerable amount of time that will pass before the iPhone 5 comes out.
Rumor 3 – Samsung was the reason why the iPhone 5 was delayed, or is being delayed – iPhone 5 Rumors
Another set of iPhone 5 rumors suggest that Samsung had been contracted by Apple to manufacture a “critical part” in the iPhone 5. While the phrase “critical part” immediately suggests that someone with a wild imagination conjured up this rumor out of thin air, the rumors do try to mention some sources in the form of a Korean newspaper that goes by the name of “The Hankyoreh”.
Apparently, these iPhone 5 rumors have enough sources to say that the “critical part” actually had something to do with the A6 processor. The only reason that will allow us to give this rumors just a little bit of credibility is that Samsung did make the processor for the original iPhone and the iPhone 3. These particular iPhone 5 rumors also suggest that this delay by Samsung has actually also delayed the release of the iPad 3, which is also tipped to be carrying an A6 processor.
These iPhone 5 rumors also indicated that Apple and Samsung have a contract for parts that will run out in 2012. The rumor stated that the relationship between Apple and Samsung is not very rosy at the moment. If Apple decide not to renew their current parts contract, who will they choose as the next parts supplier? If you remember, things have gotten a little ugly between Apple and Samsung. Earlier in 2011, Apple filed a lawsuit against Samsung, accusing Samsung that it basically stole the design of the iPhone to incorporate into the Galaxy Android phone that has become very popular now. The lawsuit filed by Apple also accused Samsung of many other things as well.
So, to round this rumor up, it is basically saying that Samsung could deliberately be giving Apple a hard time when it comes to parts that will allow the iPhone 5 to get out of the production line. Our guess is that Apple is pretty desperate to get out of the relationship with Samsung as well, as it doesn’t make any sense to have your lead competitor as your parts supplier. With the Galaxy S2 and the iPhone 4S still going head to head, we are quite surprised that the relationship has not been terminated already.
So, there it is, our roundup of the latest iPhone 5 rumors. Other less notable rumors that we have written about in our Apple Biter’s blog are rumors that talk about a iPhone 5 projector and air bag technology in the iPhone 5.
