iPhone 5 Screen Size – Why It Might Stay at 3.5 Inches?

If you are reading this article, there could be a fair chance that you are expecting Apple to give you a larger screen size in the iPhone 5. Well, if that was the case, you could very well be setting yourself up for disappointment as the iPhone 5 will most probably come with the same 3.5 inch screen that has been sported in the current and previous generation iPhones. We are not trying to cook up any rumors about the iPhone 5 screen size. But, we are just trying to arrive at some conclusions based on some assumptions we have made. Take a look at our assumptions on the iPhone 5 screen size.
iPhone 5 screen size – Why it will stay at 3.5 inches?
Steve Jobs was never a fan of the bigger screens – Why the iPhone 5 screen size will remain at 3.5 inches?
There were recently some rumors floating around that said that Steve Jobs actually canned the iPhone 5 idea at the last minute as he just didn’t want to put out a phone with a screen that was larger than 3.5 inches. Apparently, several other staff at Apple wanted to increase the screen size of the iPhone 5, so that it will allow the phone to accommodate the large LTE chips that will enable 4G LTE compatibility. Steve Jobs was well aware that the iPhone could not take on the present generation LTE chips with a screen size of just 3.5 inches. But, despite that, he decided that Apple should release the iPhone 4S, without 4G LTE compatibility. Jobs firmly believed that Apple can wait until smaller, next generation LTE chips are made. There are many industry experts who are saying that October 4, 2011 would have been the official release date for the iPhone 5, with 4G LTE capability, if only Steve Jobs had agreed with the rest of the design team, to make a larger iPhone 5 screen size.
Instead, the world got the iPhone 4S, with Siri, an A5 processor and the iOS 5 as the only major improvements over the iPhone 4. Honestly, we respect Steve Jobs’ decision to keep the iPhone’s screen size at 3.5 inches. He dreamed up the iPhone on his own and he was well within his right to keep the screen size at 3.5 inches, if that is what he thought would be the right screen size for the iPhone 5. There are also several other pertinent reasons that call for the iPhone 5 screen size to remain at 3.5 inches. Some of them are discussed in more detail below.
Larger screen size means less battery life – Why the iPhone 5 screen size will remain at 3.5 inches?
A larger screen means that the phone’s battery will drain faster. Steve Jobs has always stressed that the iPhone will offer brilliant battery life. Though Apple have seemed to really fall off the path with the iPhone 4S’s battery life, the battery problems in the iPhone 4S can be associated with the integration with the iOS 5 and not the phone’s core hardware. Interestingly, Jobs was never a fan of Flash because Flash was a very power hungry application.
So, if you put the iPhone 4S battery fiasco aside, I think you will agree with us when we say that the iPhone has consistently been among the best, if not the best, when it comes to battery performance on a phone.
So, this would have given Steve Jobs another vehement reason to disallow the iPhone 5 screen size to be anything more than 3.5 inches, as the 3.5 inch screen has been very good for the iOS and the iPhone’s power requirements.
Jobs has always been very particular about the iPhone giving great battery life. There are rumors that suggest that Jobs rejected LTE/4G chip support in the iPhone because the chips were just too big and power hungry for the current 3.5 inches screen.
Fragmentation of the iOS that might be caused by a larger screen size – Why the iPhone 5 screen size will remain at 3.5 inches?
This is another very important aspect that might cause the iPhone 5 to sport a 3.5 inches screen. Jobs’ theory was that varying screen sizes will fragment the integrity of the iOS and its usability as an upgrade. To understand that a little better, try to think of what happened with the iOS 5. When the iOS 5 was made available in the iPhone 4S, it was also announced that the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS would also be eligible for firmware upgrades.
The theory is that different screen sizes will make it difficult for future iOS upgrades to be used across the board, in iPhones that belong to the previous generations. So, if the iPhone 5 were to come out with an iOS6 operating system and a 4 inch screen, there is all the probability that the iOS 6 cannot be used by the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4. If Apple wanted to allow iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S users to upgrade to the 4′ inch iPhone 5′s iOS6, it will mean that different versions will have to be made available. This has never been the Apple way of doing things. For Apple and Steve Jobs, uniformity has always been a big issue.
For this reason, we think that the iPhone 5 screen size will remain at 3.5 inches.
If the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4 had 4 inch screens, the iPhone 3GS would not have been able to receive an iOS 5 upgrade as firmware upgrades generally become difficult when screen size is changed
Android having a lot of trouble with a multitude of screen sizes – Why the iPhone 5 screen size will remain at 3.5 inches?
If you have a friend who uses an Android phone, ask him or her if their screen even froze for no reason. The answer will invariably be “Yes, that happened once”. Some people might even tell you that it happens quite often. We suspect that the Android OS causes screen freezes on many Android phones because one Android OS is designed for Android phones that come with screen sizes that range from anywhere between 3 inches to even 4.7 inches.
While Android is powerful enough to keep the general functionality going along very smoothly, regardless of screen size, the problems do begin to creep in when one begins to download apps that were specifically made for Android phones with a particular screen size.
This is another strong reason why Apple will keep the iPhone 5 screen size at 3.5 inches, in our opinion.
Aesthetics – Why the iPhone 5 screen size will remain at 3.5 inches?
In our opinion, the least compelling reason for the iPhone 5 screen size to remain at 3.5 inches is because we think that Apple has already decided, quite firmly, that a 3.5 inches screen is the most ideal screen size for a phone. It allows the user to use two hands comfortably and it also allows for great one hand use. If you have small hands, some of the Android models can look like a small tablet in your hands, especially when the Android phone is more than 5 inches tall. A 3.5 screen size phone will also slide into a pocket quite conveniently, without making you look like a dork who carries a big object in your pants, with the rectangular outline showing and all!
So, do you guys agree with our assumptions? Will the iPhone 5 screen size remain at 3.5 inches or do you really think it will be bigger? Either way, please do tell us about your reasons as we would love to hear from you.
