The Samsung Stratosphere is a 4G LTE enabled phone that comes with a full Qwerty keyboard. It looks like Samsung is targeting the business consumer with this phone model as the phone has a number of security features to offer. The Qwerty keyboard is also usually installed to target business users. Apart from the security options, this smartphone can appeal to the buyer in other ways as well. Read on to learn more about the Samsung Stratosphere specs.
The Good about the Samsung Stratosphere specs
A Qwerty keyboard, 4G LTE speeds, 4 inch screen and security options are not features that you will easily find as a bundle in other phones. The phone also has a 5MP camera, capable of HD video recording, to keep the fun aspect interesting as well. It also runs Gingerbread which will give the phone user all the power and flexibility of Android’s second most recent OS.
The Bad about the Samsung Stratosphere specs
The pricing of the phone has been set in such a way that about $50 more can give you the option to buy a Samsung Galaxy S2 that has many superior features like a dual core processor, 8MP camera and 1080P HD recording.
Summary of the Samsung Stratosphere specs
There are some users out there who absolutely require a Qwerty keyboard on their phone. If you are one of those people who also requires 4G LTE speeds, the Samsung Stratosphere will fit your bill perfectly. If the Qwerty keyboard is not important to you, we would recommend that you shop around a little bit more, to find a phone that has more to offer in the camera and processor department, for just a little bit more money.
Design – Samsung Stratosphere specs
The phone has a remarkable similarity to the Samsung Epic 4G, a phone that was released just a few months ago. The back of the Stratosphere however looks quite different. Samsung have given the phone’s back a slightly textured feel that is nice to touch and feel. The grip is also a little better and it lends the phone some sophistication when it comes to design.
Here are the Samsung Stratosphere specs in regards to physical dimensions. It is just under 5 inches in height and 2.54 inches wide. The thickness is .55 inches. The phone would have been a lot slimmer if not for the well made Qwerty keyboard which gives the phone some beefiness from the side.
Samsung Stratosphere with 4G LTE support, 4 Inch screen, 5MP camera and VPN security options
The usable screen size on the Samsung Stratosphere is a 4 inch Super AMOLED screen that is capable of putting out a 800X480 resolution. This screen’s resolution is definitely not top of the line although it is pretty vibrant and rich to look at, especially when indoors.
Miscellaneous details – Samsung Stratosphere specs
Samsung Stratosphere specs include the custom Touch Wiz interface. This custom user interface does not not interfere with Gingerbread and just runs in the foreground. The likability of this custom interface is a subjective thing. Some will like it while some will just wish that Samsung gave them an undiluted Android experience. But, you do have the default Android options such as the leap screen. So, the Touch Wiz will not completely throw you off if you do not happen to like it. It just offers a few features that you may or may not find use for.
The phone has dual cameras. The front facing 1.3MP camera can make video calls. The primary, rear facing camera is discussed in more detail later.
Storage space – Samsung Stratosphere specs
The Samsung Stratosphere specs include 4GB of installed storage space that comes in the form of a pre-installed SD card. This SD card can be removed and upgraded to one that can support up to 32GB. The phone has just 512MB of inbuilt storage.
Qwerty keyboard – Samsung Stratosphere specs
If you type out long business emails, you will love the super efficient Qwerty keyboard. It is a 5 row keyboard that is very convenient for those who use numbers frequently, as all 10 numbers have a dedicated button. There are also a few convenient keys that will allow the user to access search, menu and home. The keys are back lit and made very nicely. The orange accents is a nice touch that is both functionally and cosmetically appealing. Typing on this keyboard is a rather enjoyable experience. In short, business users will be very pleased with the aesthetics and performance of the keyboard.
Security options – Samsung Stratosphere specs
Samsung Stratosphere specs include an array of security options that will make this quite a secure business phone. Security options include VPN compatibility, encryption and compatibility with Microsoft ActiveSync. The phone also has an option called Wi-Fi direct that might come in handy. It can also be used as a Wi-Fi hot spot.
Camera quality – Samsung Stratosphere specs
Samsung Stratosphere specs include a 5MP camera in the back and a 1.3MP camera in the front. Though most smartphones these days don a 8MP camera, the Stratosphere has stuck to a 5MP model, with some brilliant results. In our opinion, the quality of indoor shots with the 5MP camera were actually better than what many other 8MP camera phones are capable of. Part of that credit will have to go to the software that allows pictures to be taken in 14 different modes that will each have their use in various light conditions.
The 5MP Camera on the Samsung Stratosphere can match the 8MP cameras in many higher end smartphones
Even the performance of the simple 1.3MP camera in the front was better than the front facing camera of most of the higher priced smartphones.
Samsung Stratosphere specs include video capture at 720P, in HD format. Video quality is excellent as long as the video is being shot in bright light conditions. If you move around a lot or go from an area with bright light to low light suddenly, the camera’s light sensors will struggle to keep up. Otherwise, Samsung Stratosphere specs are a winner in the camera department.
Call quality – Samsung Stratosphere specs
Call quality is very good. Samsung have done very well in paying attention to the business user’s need for good call quality. Occasionally, the voices get garbled a little bit although this problem just happened a few times in the many times we made calls. The garbling is not significant enough for one to lose track of what is being said.
Speakerphone quality is not good though. First of all, you might have to turn up the call volume quite a bit when you are in speakerphone mode. There is also quite a pronounced echo effect and the speaker struggles to put out the voices without a tinny effect. It can be used for short conversations although we would not recommend this phone if you are one of those people who likes to carry out long drawn out conversations on speakerphone.
Data transfer speeds – Samsung Stratosphere specs
4G LTE speeds are excellent on the Samsung Stratosphere. In fact, 4G LTE speeds is one of the highlights of the Samsung Stratosphere specs. Depending on your location, you can manage download speeds of up to 32Mbps on this phone. Content streaming is not an issue with this phone. However, there might just be an odd delay when you launch a browser or web based application, as explained below.
Processor and performance – Samsung Stratosphere specs
The most dissapointing Samsung Stratosphere specs have to do with the 1GHz single core processor. This phone would have done nicely with a dual core processor. The 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor is pretty snappy with general navigation and general use although it stutters ever so briefly with heavier applications. There is also a little bit of camera lag that can frustrate you if you take a lot of pictures at one go.
Battery life – Samsung Stratosphere specs
The large 1,800 mAh battery can provide 8 hours of talk time which is very impressive for a 4G LTE enabled phone. Most of the other 4G LTE models will usually last for just 5-6 hours of continuous talk time on a 4G network. In that way, the Samsung Stratosphere specs might help you squeeze out those extra 2-3 hours in a work day, without having to resort to o a car charger or secondary charger in the office.
Conclusion – Samsung Stratosphere specs
Samsung Stratosphere specs is a package that has been put together for a business user who is looking for a 4G LTE phone with a Qwerty keyboard. If either one of those specs are not very appealing to you, you should probably skip on this phone and go for something else. But, if 4G LTE and a Qwerty keyboard are high on your priority list, this is definitely one of the top contenders in the smartphone market today as it has several other nice features like Gingerbread, great 5MP camera, HD video recording and much more.
